Some people even think their glutes are completely \u201cshut off\u201d (a concern I hear from clients).<\/p>\n<p>Your glutes\u2014gluteus maximus (your ass)\u2014is the biggest, most powerful muscle on your body. It has been granted with important jobs, such as keeping your body erect, as well as smaller jobs like walking up stairs. <strong>Despite its size and importance, many of us have underdeveloped glutes<\/strong>. Some people even think their glutes are completely \u201cshut off\u201d (a concern I hear from clients).<\/p>\n<p>But as <a href=\"https:\/\/coquitlamwellness.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"80991\">physiotherapist Stephanie Clark<\/a>, from Coquitlam Wellness in British Columbia, Canada says, your glutes are not shut off. \u201cIf your glutes were actually shut off, you probably wouldn\u2019t be able to walk or stand,\u201d she said. \u201cThere may be asymmetries and compensatory muscle recruitment patterns, but your glutes are most definitely working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They might be working, but they\u2019re likely weak.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, here are six exercises to help get your glutes firing, and build strength to iron out those asymmetries, so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/5-exercises-to-make-women-stronger\/\" data-lasso-id=\"80992\">build that booty into the powerful machine<\/a> it has the potential to be.<\/p>\n<p>In case that isn\u2019t motivating enough, haven\u2019t you heard well-developed, muscular asses are sexy? Just saying.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1-warm-ups-for-your-glutes-glute-bridge-variations\">1. Warm-Ups for Your Glutes: Glute Bridge Variations<\/h2>\n<p>Real simple. Lay on your back with your feet on the ground and your knees bent. Raise your hips as high as you can and squeeze your butt cheeks together.<\/p>\n<p>Other glute bridge variations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marching Glute Bridges<\/li>\n<li>Single-Leg Glute Bridges<\/li>\n<li>Glute Bridge Holds<\/li>\n<li>Banded Glute Bridges<\/li>\n<li>Banded Glute Bridge Holds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pick two or three to add to your warm up and log 20 to 30 reps of each, or hold for 1 to 3 minutes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media_embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/335965222\" width=\"640px\" height=\"360px\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"2-warm-ups-for-your-glutes-clamshells\">2. Warm-Ups for Your Glutes: Clamshells<\/h2>\n<p>Attach a circular band around your thighs just above your knees, lay on your side, bend your knees to a 90-degree angle. Keep your feet together and raise your top leg as high as you can. Control the movement as you raise and lower your top leg\u2014the slower the better. You\u2019ll probably <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/effective-workouts-you-can-do-at-home\/\" data-lasso-id=\"80993\">feel like you\u2019re in an 80&#8217;s aerobic video<\/a>, but I promise you your glutes will turn on.<\/p>\n<p>Log 20-30 clamshells on both legs in your warm up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media_embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/335965377\" width=\"640px\" height=\"360px\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"3-warm-ups-for-your-glutes-bird-dogs\">3. Warm-Ups for Your Glutes: Bird Dogs<\/h2>\n<p>On all fours, slowly raise one arm and the opposite leg. Focus on getting both long and high. Hold for two seconds at the highest point, and then slowly lower back down to the ground. Make sure you\u2019re squeezing the bum cheek of the leg you\u2019re raising.<\/p>\n<p>Add 20 per side to your warm up.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media_embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/335965530\" width=\"640px\" height=\"360px\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"4-strength-building-exercises-for-your-glutes-single-leg-kb-or-db-rdls\">4. Strength Building Exercises For Your Glutes: Single-Leg KB or DB RDLs<\/h2>\n<p>Stiff-legged, single leg Romanian deadlifts are tremendously powerful for the glutes. Keep these slow and controlled.<\/p>\n<p>Can you do 5 sets of 8 reps per side with 30 to 40 percent of your body weight?<\/p>\n<div class=\"media_embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/335964469\" width=\"640px\" height=\"360px\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"5-strength-building-exercises-for-your-glutes-weighted-step-ups\">5. Strength Building Exercises For Your Glutes: Weighted Step-Ups<\/h2>\n<p>Holding onto a DB or KB in each hand, step onto a box that\u2019s level with your hip (ie. your knee should be at the same height as your hip as you step-up).<\/p>\n<p>Can you do 5 sets of 8 reps per side holding onto 25 percent of your body weight in each hand?<\/p>\n<div class=\"media_embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/335963671\" width=\"640px\" height=\"360px\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"6-strength-building-exercises-for-your-glutes-lunges-of-all-sorts\">6. Strength Building Exercises For Your Glutes: Lunges Of All Sorts<\/h2>\n<p>The tried and true lunge\u2014the king of the glutes!<\/p>\n<p>There are so many variations you can do here to mix it up, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walking Lunges<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/reverse-lunge\/\" data-lasso-id=\"151314\">Reverse Lunges<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Farmer Carry Walking Lunges<\/li>\n<li>Front Rack Reverse Lunges<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t be scared to load up on these bad boys! Here\u2019s a challenge: try working up to a max load 15-meter back rack or front rack walking lunge.
