All you need to do is answer the following question:<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><strong>Are you hard enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The human male likes to think he\u2019s ready for anything. And that includes sex. <strong>To be more specific, there are certain areas at the front of his brain, such as the nucleus accumbens, which drive him to seek out the pleasure of sexual interaction.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22641964\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62951\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For that pleasure to be achieved, the brain obviously requires other parts of the anatomy to cooperate, which can only happen when physiology and biochemistry are within the normal range. This is also what we need when we\u2019re looking for better performance.<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s the easiest way to assess optimal physiology in the hard-charging male? A soldier standing resolutely at attention. A sail raised with a sturdy mast. <strong>More specifically, a well-pitched tent first thing in the morning. You get the picture.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">If you exercise regularly and your mornings aren\u2019t particularly glorious, you might need to rethink your training.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"morning-glory\">Morning Glory<\/h2>\n<p><strong>As well as being a source of endless sexual euphemism, morning glory does actually have a scientific name &#8211; sleep-related erection (SRE).<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24774994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62952\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/strong> SRE is also known as nocturnal penile tumescence, but that\u2019s difficult to say with a straight face.<\/p>\n<p>Technically, SREs also include the erections you have while you\u2019re asleep, but unless you frequently poke your partner in the eye throughout the night, you\u2019re generally less aware of those.<\/p>\n<p>Sleep-related erections occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. SREs start as we enter the REM phase of our sleep cycle and last until the next cycle of non-REM sleep.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15994100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62953\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Importantly, it turns out that morning glory could be a surprisingly good way to monitor both hormone levels and health in adult males.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In the adult male, SREs are linked to levels of testosterone, with testosterone production also peaking during REM sleep.<\/strong><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/229261a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62954\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>As testosterone levels drop, frequency of SREs declines.<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9349750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62955\"><sup>5<\/sup><\/a> The same phenomenon is seen in most male mammals, and monitoring of SREs has even been used to look at REM sleep in babies while still in the uterus.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1958756\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62956\">6<\/a><\/sup> But try not to think about that last point too much.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, it turns out that morning glory could be a surprisingly good way to monitor both hormone levels and health in adult males.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For instance, if you find yourself wrestling to aim at the toilet every morning, you\u2019re probably nicely situated at the top of this bell curve:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58129\" style=\"height: 329px; width: 600px;\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/morningglory.png\" alt=\"libido, testosterone, erectile dysfunction, male health\" width=\"600\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/morningglory.png 600w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/morningglory-300x165.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\"><em>I know, it looks suspiciously like <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/maximize-performance-through-controlling-your-arousal-level\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62957\">the Yerkes-Dodson \u201carousal\u201d curve<\/a><\/em>. <em>Coincidence?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, if you exercise regularly and your mornings haven\u2019t been particularly glorious recently, it\u2019s likely you\u2019re not finding the balance between training and recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the other end of the scale (not enough exercise), there\u2019s also a drop off as health deteriorates, which could be reversed with closer attention to activity and lifestyle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"running-the-lead-out-of-your-pencil\">Running the Lead Out of Your Pencil<\/h2>\n<p>The negative effects of pushing yourself too hard in training are well understood, but something we often ignore. It\u2019s easy to think you\u2019re not achieving your health and body composition goals because you\u2019re not working hard enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But this feeling you are not putting in the work is often not a situation that can be fixed by more training or more dieting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Few of us have the luxury of multiple training sessions per day or, in fact, the time to train every day, but this does not mean we aren\u2019t at risk of overtraining.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;[T]here\u2019s a reason they say training for an Ironman is an excellent form of contraception. And it\u2019s not just because your wife doesn\u2019t like the look of you in Lycra.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In this context, overtraining is simply having the stress of training overwhelm all the other stuff going on in your life, like sleep, nutrition, and stresses at home or at work.<\/strong><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23667795\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62958\">7<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Think about this: just four weeks of 1,000-calorie-per-day energy deficit (despite eating 3,000-4,000 calories per day) accompanied by only four hours of sleep per night is enough to make available testosterone levels drop by ninety percent, with total testosterone well below the level at which frequency of morning glory would drop off (around 200ng\/dl or 7nmol\/l).<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/229261a0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62959\">4<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9349750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62960\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>This drop-off may sound extreme, but for the hard-working man with a couple of kids and a stressful job who is also trying to regain the six-pack of his youth, this is much more common than you\u2019d think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The oxidative stress and hormonal imbalances due to high-volume endurance training in particular are associated with lower sperm quality and may increase the risk of male infertility.<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/benthamopen.com\/contents\/pdf\/TORSJ\/TORSJ-3-105.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62961\"><sup>8<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After all, there\u2019s a reason they say training for an Ironman is an excellent form of contraception. Because the blood vessels \u201cdown there\u201d are very sensitive, SREs (morning glory) can be a surprisingly easy way to monitor health.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, erectile function is a good predictor of current cardiovascular problems you might not be aware of , as well as future risk of heart attacks and strokes.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15994100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62962\">3<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2733110\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62963\">9<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23347226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62964\">10<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In men who aren\u2019t active, increasing physical activity also results in improved erectile function.<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25801073\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62965\"><sup>11<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Approaching exercise in a step-wise fashion beginning with just brisk walking will increase testosterone levels and reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.<\/strong><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/the-great-upside-down-movement-pyramid-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62966\">12<\/a><\/sup> It doesn\u2019t take much to be a hard man.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"caveats\">Caveats<\/h2>\n<p>As SREs occur during REM sleep, they won\u2019t necessarily be around if you wake up regularly from deep (non-REM) sleep using an alarm clock. An easy way to check would be to treat yourself to sleeping in once in a while. You deserve it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A quick look down in the morning can give you a good idea of how your body is adapting to an increased training load or other changes and stresses in your life.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Both testosterone and frequency of SREs decrease as we age, but this tends to happen in line with other chronic diseases.<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15994100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"62967\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> <strong>Therefore, if you\u2019re smart about training and nutrition, you can expect many decades of glorious mornings to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-58131\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shutterstock282940193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shutterstock282940193.jpg 600w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/shutterstock282940193-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">An easy way to check your SRE status would be to treat yourself to sleeping in once in a while.
