{"id":25685,"date":"2014-10-29T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-10-29T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/\/\/uncategorized\/a-weightlifting-etiquette-handbook-for-crossfitters"},"modified":"2021-11-22T01:10:38","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T06:10:38","slug":"a-weightlifting-etiquette-handbook-for-crossfitters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/a-weightlifting-etiquette-handbook-for-crossfitters\/","title":{"rendered":"A Weightlifting Etiquette Handbook for CrossFitters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Dear CrossFitters:<\/strong> I love you, know I do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But also know that our weightlifting cousins look at us and our grip-and-rip weightlifting technique as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XMxAATsf088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49195\">the Cousin Eddies of the sport<\/a>.<\/strong> While they hone their craft in a world of etiquette-influenced finery, we come across as the already-drunk relative who shows up at the wedding reception wearing a motorcycle jacket and chains.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-crossfitters-can-learn-from-weightlifters\">What CrossFitters Can Learn From Weightlifters<\/h2>\n<p>Sure, CrossFit as a movement has certainly helped to <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/the-sport-of-weightlifting-versus-weightlifting-for-other-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49196\">revive a level of interest in the sport of weightlifting<\/a>, and that is great.<strong> But just because we may have pumped a little life into the sport, doesn\u2019t mean we get to trample on its traditions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/the-sport-of-weightlifting-versus-weightlifting-for-other-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49197\">The Sport of Weightlifting Versus Weightlifting for Other Sports<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/10-rules-of-the-lifting-platform-that-apply-to-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49198\"> Katie Chasey wrote about weightlifting etiquette<\/a> a lot of people were up in arms at many of the suggestions in that article. There was a good deal of \u201cgood Lord, just lift for crying out loud\u201d push back. <strong>As if sports etiquette is somehow a foreign concept to us CrossFitters. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/10-rules-of-the-lifting-platform-that-apply-to-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49199\">10 Rules of the Lifting Platform That Apply to Everyone<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It shouldn\u2019t be.<\/strong> Just because we train in converted warehouses and use the same bars for our snatch one-rep-max as we do for \u201cFran,\u201d even though we\u2019re \u201cunderground\u201d and \u201cbeastmode,\u201d doesn\u2019t excuse us from the basic courtesies of the sport of weightlifting. Even in the world\u2019s most unholy of bowling alleys, you still don\u2019t throw at the same time as the person next to you, and on the shittiest golf courses you still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/golf\/comments\/6uepmn\/serious_why_does_stepping_on_someones_line_get\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49200\">don\u2019t step on someone\u2019s line.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We can <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/why-dont-olympic-weightlifters-overhead-squat-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49201\">learn much from weightlifters<\/a>. What we learn only elevates the sport of CrossFit, so why not do it? <strong>With that, I give you the 2014 Weightlifting Handbook for CrossFitters:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"claim-only-a-true-personal-record\">Claim Only a True Personal Record<\/h2>\n<p>We all know that CrossFit<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/so-you-want-to-be-a-crossfit-judge-7-tips-to-help-you-make-the-right-decisions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49202\"> has its own version of a \u201cgood rep\u201d<\/a> and for competition it\u2019s whatever the rules will allow. Fine. If you are competing in some sort of throwdown (or even at the CrossFit Games) and press-outs are allowed, then by all means, accept that rep as a good rep. <strong>In Grid, for example, you can press a snatch out even if it hits you in the head:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"lyte-wrapper\" style=\"width:853px;max-width:100%;margin:5px;\"><div class=\"lyMe hidef\" id=\"WYL_N1OOip6O6oM\"><div id=\"lyte_N1OOip6O6oM\" data-src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FN1OOip6O6oM%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" class=\"pL\"><div class=\"tC\"><div class=\"tT\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"play\"><\/div><div class=\"ctrl\"><div class=\"Lctrl\"><\/div><div class=\"Rctrl\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><noscript><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/N1OOip6O6oM\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FN1OOip6O6oM%2F0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"853\" height=\"460\" \/><br \/>Watch this video on YouTube<\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\"><em>Go to :29 to see Sam Dancer\u2019s now infamous 240lb headsnatch.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you are training lifts at your box, though, you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/magical-movement-the-importance-of-virtuosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49203\">hold yourself to a higher standard<\/a>. <strong>Ask yourself, \u201cWould this get at least two white lights?\u201d<\/strong> If not, then don\u2019t put that record up on the wall.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"rtecenter\" id=\"ask-yourself-would-this-get-at-least-two-white-lights-if-not-then-dont-put-that-record-up-on-the-wall\"><em>&#8220;Ask yourself, &#8216;Would this get at least two white lights?&#8217;\u00a0If not, then don\u2019t put that record up on the wall.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>If you snatch the bar and spend six seconds fighting to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/the-press-out-controversy-in-olympic-weightlifting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49204\">press it out<\/a>, don\u2019t count it.\u00a0<strong>If you snatch your new personal record and fail to control the bar, don\u2019t count it.<\/strong>\u00a0(Even if you drop it in celebration. I have seen a lot of video where the bar comes flying down as part of a celebratory dance before control is ever maintained). If you go down onto your knees, don\u2019t count that lift. It&#039;s not official with USAW but we are CrossFitters so it counts at the Games.\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"lL\" style=\"max-width:100%;width:853px;margin:5px;\"><\/div><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150121080711\/http:\/\/www.5efitness.co.za\/5e-weightlifting-powerlifting\/weightlifting-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49205\">Here is a link to the basic weightlifting meet rules<\/a>. <strong>I suggest you hold yourself to this standard when claiming your records.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"no-drive-by-coaching\">No Drive-By Coaching<\/h2>\n<p>Here is where weightlifting is a lot like <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/get-strong-to-bring-your-golf-game-to-the-next-level\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49206\">golf<\/a>. When even the best golfer in your foursome is having a bad day, someone, usually the worst golfer in the bunch, feels absolutely compelled to offer his or her two cents. \u201cYou looked up\u201d or \u201cTry turning your club head in a bit.\u201d <strong>This usually results in the critiqued golfer developing an inner rage that can only be requited with Scotch.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The same applies to weightlifting. My coach is <a href=\"https:\/\/games.crossfit.com\/athlete\/3634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49207\">Stephen Flamm<\/a>. Besides him, the only other person I trust to watch my form and give me feedback is my daughter, Chelsea. <strong>Between the two of them, they know what I do consistently well and what I do consistently poorly.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If some other person in the box wanders by and says, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/20-more-tips-that-will-make-you-better-at-olympic-weightlifting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49208\">You\u2019re bending your arms early<\/a>,\u201d chances are, I already know that. <strong>The drive-by coach usually knows little about your skill level, technique, typical game, and overall ability<\/strong>. Why would it be acceptable to coach someone in that vacuum?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"never-ever-violate-someones-lifting-space\">Never, Ever Violate Someone\u2019s Lifting Space<\/h2>\n<p>There are some unwritten rules to which we should religiously adhere. <strong>One of them is that the platform is sacred space when another lifter is using it. <\/strong>This tends to include the two- to three-foot radius around said platform, as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25683\" style=\"height: 295px; width: 450px;\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/platformcrossing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/platformcrossing.jpg 421w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/platformcrossing-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span style=\"font-size: 11px;\"><em>Faces blurred to protect the guilty.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/5-pieces-of-crossfit-gym-etiquette-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49209\">Never walk across someone\u2019s platform<\/a>, even when he or she is not on it. It\u2019s rude. <strong>Never cross over a platform for chalk, plates, or because it\u2019s the shortest distance between two points. <\/strong>Never hang out behind someone on his or her platform, even if you\u2019re sharing a bar. Wait off to the side for your lift.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-in-doubt-freeze\">When in Doubt, Freeze<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty obvious when people are in the early phase of their progression. Often, these <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/do-cartwheels-why-you-need-learning-and-fun-in-your-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49210\">athletes will be chatting, interacting<\/a>, and doing multiple reps as they warm up to a heavier weight. <strong>But you should notice a subtle shift in demeanor as they begin to approach max effort weights.<\/strong> The chatting stops, they may begin their rituals of stomping or smacking themselves, etc.<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"rtecenter\" id=\"never-walk-across-someones-platform-even-when-he-or-she-is-not-on-it-its-rude\"><em>&#8220;Never walk across someone\u2019s platform, even when he or she is not on it. It\u2019s rude.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s when you need to be keenly aware of respecting another athlete\u2019s space. <strong>As someone prepares for a heavy lift, just stop. <\/strong>You can put that five-pound plate away ten seconds from now. Do not cross in front of a lifter when he or she is executing, or create any sort of distraction. Think golf. And of course, avert your eyes if he or she misses so as to avoid any awkward glances.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25684\" style=\"height: 427px; width: 640px;\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/104801817377234796201061522906959840976188n.jpg\" alt=\"crossfit, weightlifting, golf, etiquette, sports etiquette\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/104801817377234796201061522906959840976188n.jpg 600w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/104801817377234796201061522906959840976188n-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"leave-the-womens-bars-for-snatching-and-cleaning\">Leave the Women\u2019s Bars for Snatching and Cleaning<\/h2>\n<p>Women\u2019s bars are 25mm in diameter and men\u2019s are 28mm. <strong>This diameter difference is for one purpose only: to allow a hook grip for those of you who have smaller hands, as is usually the case with women versus men.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtecenter\"><strong>WATCH HERE: The Hook Grip (Video)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since you don\u2019t need to hook grip when <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/how-to-use-the-front-squat-to-improve-strength-and-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49213\">performing squats<\/a>, then when it\u2019s time for the squat portion of your training session, put the 25mm bar back in the rack for someone else and use a men\u2019s bar.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"some-final-weightlifting-etiquette-items\">Some Final Weightlifting Etiquette Items<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean up one more thing than you get out. You know you see that renegade 2.5 pounder on the floor that\u2019s been there for three hours. So, what the hell, just grab it and put it away.<\/li>\n<li>If you take a piece of chalk and frantically chalk up the bar like buttering a piece of corn on the cob, by all means, familiarize yourself with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p4dX-hyJb04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"49214\">how to clean the bar.\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re increasing by twenty pounds per lift, for the love of all humanity don\u2019t use all the ten-pound plates in the house.
