But time and again, I see gym owners give up on the process or avoid it because of the stress and confusion involved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I see this because I run a custom apparel business myself.<\/strong> I\u2019ve seen the mistakes most people are prone to making. So, here are my recommended strategies to avoid the headaches and just get down to what matters &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/culture-community-and-kids-3-often-missed-elements-of-fitness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"89769\">bringing your community together<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"too-many-options-and-styles\">Too Many Options and Styles<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Did you know that people actually buy less when they have more options?<\/strong> If you\u2019re curious about why choice is demotivating to clients and consumers, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11138768\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"89770\">Columbia Jam Study<\/a>. Basically, the study focused on a jam-tasting booth set up inside a popular grocery chain. On different weekends, they tested the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On one Saturday, the booth would have 24 different jams to choose from.<\/li>\n<li>On the following Saturday, the booth would have only six different jams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>It turned out that the booth with fewer choices sold more jars of jam<\/strong>. This has been tested over and over again with various products in different studies.<\/p>\n<p>So where exactly do pitfalls occur in your gym apparel order? Well for one, clients don\u2019t have time to think about what color shirt they want. <strong>They just want someone to show them the <em>best<\/em> option, not all the options.<\/strong> So, yes, you probably designed a shirt that works across ten different colors, but that doesn\u2019t mean you should take advantage of it and have all those shirts made.<\/p>\n<p>We often have people come to us wanting every color shirt we offer. We try to talk them out of it, but sometimes people just ignore our advice. Then, when they reorder, they will tell us, \u201cI sold out of X color, but I have a whole box of Y color still left!\u201d In these situations, groupthink or <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/oog-make-fire-man-make-fitness-cults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"89771\">herd mentality<\/a> takes over.<strong> If five to six people start buying the blue shirt, everyone wants a blue shirt and you\u2019re stuck with the box of red shirts.<\/strong> When it doubt, keep it simple.<\/p>\n<p>Many owners believe that ordering different styles is the golden ticket to making sales. But just because one person wants a V-neck doesn\u2019t mean you should accommodate that one person. Gym owners tend to get out of hand, wanting six different women\u2019s cuts. <strong>Just offer one women\u2019s t-shirt, one women\u2019s tank, one men\u2019s t-shirt, and one men\u2019s tank.<\/strong> Keep everything simple.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24291\" style=\"height: 310px; width: 640px;\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/chat.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/chat.png 600w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/chat-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"too-many-cooks-in-the-kitchen\">Too Many Cooks in The Kitchen<\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019re a busy gym owner. You don\u2019t have time to coordinate the apparel order, but you know you need one. You put the office manager in charge of the order. <strong>In turn, he or she asks his or her friends for help, in turn these friends ask the rest of the gym for help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You essentially turned your profit making opportunity into a three-ring circus by inviting outsiders into some pseudo-committee decision-making process. Keep the apparel order between you and a few trusted advisors. <strong>Sure, ask for feedback from outsiders, but if this is for your profit and branding, you should have final say.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"not-having-clear-branding\">Not Having Clear Branding<\/h2>\n<p>Are you the type of owner who just isn\u2019t satisfied with the branding of your gym? You\u2019ve tried different logos and typefaces and nothing just seems to stick with you? Well the secret is that\u2019s the problem. <strong>You need to stick with one logo and branding message.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Think about all the big brands you see on an everyday basis, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"89773\">Apple<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roguefitness.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"89774\">Rogue Fitness<\/a>. All of their branding is the exact same from day one. You don\u2019t see Apple rolling out a new logo every year for every new product launch. <strong>Successful businesses stick with their branding through good times and tough times<\/strong>. Find some type of branding that demonstrates what you and your business are all about and stick with it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"no-preorder\">No Preorder<\/h2>\n<p><strong>You decided to go ahead and order tanks on behalf of the women\u2019s group training class because you think you know their sizing<\/strong>. Or you \u201cdon\u2019t have time to take a preorder\u201d so you just ordered twenty of every size.<\/p>\n<p>Wrong move! Again, this goes back to a <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/lululemon-fat-shaming-and-turning-a-profit-in-the-yoga-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"89775\">profit making opportunity<\/a>. <strong>Take the time, carefully organize the pre-order, and eliminate excess inventory headaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20173\" style=\"height: 412px; width: 640px;\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/shutterstock55941490.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/shutterstock55941490.jpg 600w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/shutterstock55941490-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"delaying-the-sale-of-shirts\">Delaying the Sale of Shirts<\/h2>\n<p>We know you\u2019re slammed with time commitments. We deal with it on a daily basis, too.
