You\u2019d better sort that our first before joining a gym. And that stuff they do is pretty difficult isn\u2019t it? What\u2019s the point in putting yourself through that? Life is hard enough without adding to it. Plus the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/how-sleep-deprivation-fries-your-hormones-your-immune-system-and-your-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24939\">you\u2019re tired all the time<\/a>. Speaking of which, you haven\u2019t really got the time anyway, not to mention the money. Let\u2019s face it &#8211; you\u2019re not cut out for this functional stuff, and anyway, you just want to tone up a bit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m sorry. You\u2019re right.<\/strong> Here\u2019s a list of 21 reasons not to join the gym (along with considered responses) that you can pick and choose from next time <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/overcoming-loved-ones-resistance-to-our-lifestyle-improvements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24940\">your fitness-mad friend or family member<\/a> is asking you to come to the next open day or foundations class:<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1-im-not-fit-strong-good-enough-yet\">1. I\u2019m not fit\/strong\/good enough yet<\/h2>\n<p>I get it. You\u2019re not there yet. Neither am I! But where is there, exactly? When will you deem yourself good enough?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s likely that when you join a gym, your whole perspective on what is fit and strong<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/on-being-strong-how-crossfit-ended-my-war-with-my-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24941\"> will be redefined<\/a> anyway. There\u2019s no avoiding that you\u2019re going to be the newbie here, and no-one will think less of you for being so. They have all been there.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-its-intimidating\">2. It\u2019s intimidating<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it is. But isn\u2019t that the case with most new things? I remember, fairly vividly, being petrified for the first week of pre-school (but it was worth it for the milk and biscuits at break time.) Go at your own pace,<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/crossfit-is-crossfit-right-how-to-choose-a-good-crossfit-gym\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24942\"> scale to your own abilities<\/a>, no one is rushing you.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-im-too-old\">3. I\u2019m too old.<\/h2>\n<p>Please watch this.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-its-too-hard\">4. It\u2019s too hard.<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, it\u2019s hard. Isn\u2019t everything in life that is worth having? Bringing up kids is hard (and there\u2019s no coach to help you there). So if you are telling me you\u2019re not doing this because it\u2019s too hard, you better not ever have any kids.<\/p>\n<p>Too hard? What kind of attitude is that? If it\u2019s because the rest of your life is hard and you don\u2019t need another hard thing to cope with, think about this &#8211; overcoming small challenges daily in the gym (yes, they are small compared to the rest of life) builds strength not just in the body <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/the-smmf-mental-training-gym-jones-style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24944\">but also in the mind<\/a>. Strength to deal with the real hard stuff in life.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-i-havent-got-the-time\">5. I haven\u2019t got the time<\/h2>\n<p>I disagree. No matter how busy you are, you have the time. Everyone can get up that little bit earlier, cut out something unnecessary (television?) or find a way (lunchtime?).<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong, I\u2019m also guilty of saying this, but what I actually meant was I haven\u2019t got the inclination, or motivation, to make the time for this. Not having any time is actually <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/finding-balance-in-our-physical-personal-and-professional-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24945\">a choice you made to do something else<\/a> with that time.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"6-i-need-to-sort-out-my-nutrition-life-work-first\">6. I need to sort out my nutrition\/life\/work first<\/h2>\n<p>I am sure you do need to sort out those things. But why first? If you haven\u2019t done so by now, what is going to change to enable you to do so? There\u2019s never a perfect time. Take the first step. Make a change that will give you more energy and inspiration to make the other changes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-its-not-in-the-budget\">7. It\u2019s not in the budget<\/h2>\n<p>Try taking out the take out meals. Or cut out a night out. That will help you get on track with your nutrition and give you enough cash for your gym membership for a month. Double winner.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-its-not-safe\">8. It\u2019s not safe<\/h2>\n<p>That is your perception, not fact. The fact is that most other sports (including most of those sports you played at school) have <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/head-impacts-in-contact-sports-could-stunt-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24946\">far worse injury rates<\/a> than strength training in terms of injuries per hours of participation.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9-that-stuffs-not-for-me\">9. That stuff\u2019s not for me<\/h2>\n<p>When \u201cthat stuff\u201d is <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/what-is-functional-strength-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24947\">basic physical movement<\/a>, and strength enough to manage at least your own bodyweight effectively, then \u201cit\u2019s not for me\u201d doesn\u2019t cut it. It\u2019s for everyone. It\u2019s for life. It\u2019s for those times when you really need it. You don\u2019t want to be the weakest when the zombies come, do you? Everyone knows the weakest get eaten first.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13450\" src=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/shutterstock119017870.jpg\" alt=\"reasons not to join a gym, don't join a gym, gym excuses, fitness excuses\" width=\"600\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/shutterstock119017870.jpg 600w, https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/shutterstock119017870-180x300.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"10-i-dont-need-to-be-that-fit-strong\">10. I don\u2019t need to be that fit\/strong<\/h2>\n<p>Who\u2019s saying you need to take it to the highest levels? You owe it to yourself to be the best version of you that you can be. You owe it to your partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/family-fitness-blaze-the-trail-and-stay-fit-this-spring-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24948\">your children<\/a>, and your grandchildren too.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"11-im-already-fit-strong\">11. I\u2019m already fit\/strong<\/h2>\n<p>Then you have nothing to worry about. Step outside your own definitions of fit and strong and into the definitions of those who are better placed <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/33-reasons-to-train-strongman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24949\">to define these terms<\/a> than you are.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"12-im-happy-with-what-im-doing-now\">12. I\u2019m happy with what I\u2019m doing now<\/h2>\n<p>Most of the time when I hear this it\u2019s from people who have been doing the same thing for a long time, because they are happy doing it.<\/p>\n<p>Read that again &#8211; <em>doing the same thing for a long time<\/em>, each and every week. Your body cannot <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/your-mind-is-your-gym-your-brain-is-all-the-equipment-you-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24950\">adapt and improve<\/a> through being subjected to exactly the same stimulus over and over again.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"13-i-have-a-chronic-bad-back-shoulder-knee\">13. I have a chronic bad back\/shoulder\/knee<\/h2>\n<p>All the more reason why you should train with professionals who have experience in helping you to work with your injury and <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/why-screening-and-corrective-exercise-should-be-the-foundation-of-every-exercise-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24951\">improve your movement<\/a>, performance, and perhaps even the injury itself. This is infinitely better than avoiding it or working around it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"14-i-dont-need-a-coach\">14. I don\u2019t need a coach<\/h2>\n<p>Are you kidding me? Everyone needs a coach. Even the best coaches need a coach. <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/feedback-from-a-coach-can-improve-your-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24952\">Feedback from a good coach improves performance &#8211; fact.<\/a> Unless you don\u2019t want to improve?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"15-i-am-not-built-for-that\">15. I am not built for that<\/h2>\n<p>We are all built to push, pull, squat, hinge, run, carry, jump, throw, and crawl. If you have lost those abilities then it\u2019s you who has let it slide. You are<a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/an-explanation-of-movnat-from-erwan-le-corre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24953\"> built for them<\/a>. I already do all that<\/h2>\n<p>Excellent. Then learn to do it better. Be stronger. Be fitter. Be better.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"17-i-do-it-for-the-social-aspect\">17. I do it for the social aspect<\/h2>\n<p>I agree, socializing with the gym crew is good fun. Some of my best friends are from the gym. Anyone who has experienced the <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/crossfit-and-community-an-interview-with-dr-allison-belger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24954\">social aspect of a community<\/a> that trains together, and works against the common enemy of difficult physical endeavour knows that this fosters a community spirit like no other. Work hard. Play harder.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"18-i-hate-insert-fundamental-movement-of-choice-here\">18. I hate (insert fundamental movement of choice here)<\/h2>\n<p>All the more reason why you need to do it. Work <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingmuscle.com\/the-problem-is-you-time-to-face-your-weaknesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"24955\">the things you are worst at<\/a> for the best and quickest progress.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"19-i-just-want-to-tone-up\">19. I just want to tone up<\/h2>\n<p>Cool. Toning up is losing fat and gaining muscle. Come along and do that and get fitter and stronger in the process.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"20-my-friend-says-insert-pessimistic-feedback-here\">20. My friend says (insert pessimistic feedback here)<\/h2>\n<p>Word of mouth and recommendation from those whom you trust is powerful. It\u2019s what social media is built on. However, nothing beats doing it yourself. Especially if your friend has never done it themselves before and is just going off what they have read from their friends on social media!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"21-but-insert-other-reason-here\">21. But (insert other reason here)<\/h2>\n<p>If after reading this your next <s>excuse<\/s> sentence starts with \u201cbut\u201d then stop reading this article now.
