Best New Year’s Sales on Smart Home Gym Equipment

Smart home gym equipment can be a great solution for those with limited space, as it gives you access to features like auto-adjusting weights in one compact unit. But it can be even more expensive than a top-notch barbell and squat rack combined, so waiting for a good holiday sale is usually worth it.

  • Tonal: Last year, through January 31, you could try Tonal for free for 90 days. If you weren’t satisfied, you could return it within 90 days of installation and get a full refund.

Best New Year’s Sales on Supplements and Nutrition

How to Find the Best New Year’s Fitness Sales

Consider Your Must-Have Features and Set a Budget

I know from personal experience how easy it is to blow a huge chunk of money on workout equipment. I’d argue that investing in items that can improve your health and wellness is worth it, but I also recognize the importance of saving money.

By doing some research in the weeks leading up to New Year’s Day, you’ll get a good idea of how much various exercise equipment costs and what you get for the price. For example, you can buy a rowing machine with a touchscreen monitor and the ability to stream classes for over $2,000. Or, for less than $500, you can buy a model with a simple screen that tracks a few basic performance metrics.

Once you identify the features that are most important to you, you can decide how much you’re willing to spend to get everything you want in your desired piece of equipment — just make sure you stick to your budget! And if you’re struggling to find equipment in your price range, check out our guide on the best budget home gym equipment.

Check the Pricing History

As someone who loves shopping, I’ve become familiar with the (sometimes shady) selling tactics of various retailers. They’ll jack up the prices of their items right before the holiday season, then offer discounts on the increased price. Unknowing shoppers may not even realize this happens and think they’re getting a good deal. In reality, they’re essentially paying the original price.

I recommend using tools like Karma to look up the pricing history of your desired gym equipment. For products sold on Amazon, Camelcamelcamel is a good resource.

Read Customer Reviews

In addition to checking the pricing history of the equipment you want, I recommend reading reviews — from multiple places, if possible. Some companies hide negative reviews on their websites, so you won’t learn the common complaints about a particular item unless you check various sources.

At Breaking Muscle, it’s our job to review fitness products, and we don’t shy away from pointing out the benefits and drawbacks of the items we test. To help guide you toward making the right decision for your needs, we’ve compiled several guides on the best home gym equipment:

Read the Fine Print

When dropping potentially thousands of dollars on a large piece of gym equipment, you’ll want to ensure your money won’t be wasted if something is wrong with it or you don’t like it. Read up on things like:

  • The company’s return policy
  • Whether or not there’s a free trial
  • How long the warranty lasts and what it covers
  • Whether or not you can finance the item

How to Find the Best Black Friday and Cyber Monday Fitness Deals

Shop Early

For the past couple of years, Black Friday hasn’t been just one day. Brands start offering deals as early as November 1 and run promotions and flash sales all month long. It’s worthwhile to start making your fitness wishlist as soon as possible. Otherwise, the item you want may be out of stock by the time Black Friday arrives.

Additionally, some companies offer their biggest and best deals for a limited number of hours on Black Friday. Hard as it may be to wake up early after a day of eating and lots of family time, it can be worth it to score major discounts on barbells, kettlebells, rowers, and more.

A young man riding the Diamondback 1260Sc
The Diamondback 1260sc exercise bike is $500 off for Black Friday 2023.

Research Pricing History

A common tactic amongst retailers is to jack up the prices of big-ticket items right before Black Friday and then offer discounts on the increased price. Ill-informed consumers may think they’re getting a good deal. In reality, they’re actually not saving much money at all. The discounted price usually ends up being close to the original price.

In the weeks before Black Friday, monitor the price of your desired items. You can set price alerts with mobile apps and browser extensions like Karma. Camelcamelcamel is a good resource for price-tracking items sold on Amazon. With these tools, you’ll be able to determine if you’re getting a legitimately good deal on Black Friday.

Research Brands and Products You Have Your Eye On

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of seeing fitness equipment available for hundreds of dollars off the original price. But researching the brands and the specific products you want and reading the fine print can save you some major headaches later on.

Start by checking the company’s return policy. Significantly discounted items may be listed as “final sale,” meaning you won’t be able to return them. Additionally, some companies will make you pay to ship the item back to their warehouse and may even charge a restocking fee. These costs can be hundreds of dollars, depending on how large and heavy the item is.

Also, review the brand’s warranty. Any respectable fitness brand will offer extensive warranties so that you don’t have to pay to replace the item if it gets damaged. Companies that sell lesser-quality items may only offer short-term warranties because they know the product likely won’t last long.

Lastly, think carefully about the features you want in your home gym equipment. For example, some cardio machines like treadmills and exercise bikes can be super basic with tiny monitors that track minimal workout metrics. Or they can include lots of high-tech features, like touchscreen monitors and streaming capabilities. How advanced or rudimentary you want your equipment to be will depend on what motivates you to work out consistently.

If you’re not sure where to start when putting together your shopping list, let Breaking Muscle guide you. It’s our job to test, research, and curate items from the most reputable brands in the industry, so you can trust our reviews:

Install Browser Extensions for Coupon Codes and Cashback Rewards

Speaking of browser extensions, you may want to sign up for one that offers cashback rewards at various online stores. One of the most popular ones that I can personally vouch for is Rakuten. When you make a purchase on a participating retailer’s website, Rakuten gets an affiliate commission based on a pre-determined percentage. Instead of keeping that commission, they share it with you.

Many companies also increase the percentage you get back for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. A brand that normally offers two percent cashback throughout the year may increase it to 10 percent for these two days.

The one drawback of Rakuten is that it only pays out commissions once every quarter. If you want more immediate savings, try the Capital One Shopping or Honey browser extensions. During checkout on participating retailers’ websites, Capital One and Honey will search for the best coupon codes and apply them to your order.

Sign Up for Emails and Texts

It’s common for companies to offer exclusive deals only to customers who opt into emails and texts. If there’s a piece of fitness equipment you really want, I recommend signing up for email and/or text alerts from the company. If you’re searching for the best Black Friday squat rack discounts, for example, you’ll be one of the first to know when the rack you want goes on sale. You can also ensure you get your desired item before it sells out or the brand stops running a promotion on it.

How To Find the Best Labor Day Fitness Sales

There are plenty of ways you can save money on workout equipment this Labor Day. To maximize your savings, follow the tips below.

Make a Plan

If you’re a fitness junkie like me, you’ll want to buy all the things at once, especially when brands offer steep discounts. But you likely also have bills to pay and families and pets to care for, and you probably want to keep some money stashed away for unexpected emergencies.

It helps to make a plan and stick to it when plotting your purchases during shopping holidays. This way, you won’t fall victim to “shiny object syndrome” and spend more money than you budgeted for. You’ll also be less likely to experience buyer’s remorse when a new exercise bike or barbell that you really didn’t need shows up at your door.

Research the Pricing History

Retailers are notorious for inflating the original prices of their products right before a major holiday to make their discounts look even better. To ensure you get a good deal, keep tabs on your desired item’s price in the weeks leading up to Labor Day. If it doesn’t change but then drops by a significant percentage for Labor Day weekend, you’re probably getting a good deal. But if the price goes up by 20 percent the week before Labor Day and then the brand offers a 20 percent discount for the holiday weekend, you won’t save any money.

CamelCamelCamel is an excellent price history checker for products on Amazon. Chrome extensions like Honey or SlickDeals work well for Amazon and other retailers. Honey allows you to create Droplists of the items you want to track and will send you notifications when prices drop. SlickDeals functions similarly and lets you create alerts for your desired products. SlickDeals doesn’t provide historical prices, though — this extension only starts tracking an item’s price once you create an alert for it.

Aside from Black Friday, Amazon Prime Day (which actually spans two days) is the best time to score major discounts on the best-selling fitness products. Whether you’re looking to round out your home gym with a top-notch rowing machine, update your gym wardrobe, or stock your pantry with a high-quality protein powder, you can save a lot of money with the best Prime Day fitness deals.

The great thing about this sales event is that Amazon doesn’t just discount products from its Amazon Basics brand or cheaper, less popular companies. You can find markdowns on high-quality fitness gear from trusted brands like Peloton, Hydrow, Bowflex, and more.

This year, Amazon Prime Day occurred in July. Another event called “Amazon Prime Big Deal Days” will take place from October 10 through October 11. Scroll down for the best deals we’ve come across, including some items that are more than 50 percent off the original price!

Best Amazon Prime Day Fitness Deals

Some of the biggest October Prime Day sales we’ve found on home gym essentials are listed below.

Tips for Scoring the Best Fitness Deals on Prime Day

You can maximize your savings and avoid missing out on the best Prime Day fitness deals by completing certain tasks to earn promotional credits, joining waitlists, using Alexa to get notifications when deals go live, and applying coupons to eligible items for additional discounts.

Complete Actions on Amazon Before Prime Day

In the past, Amazon has allowed shoppers to earn credits to use towards Prime Day purchases by performing certain tasks, such as:

Watch for Lightning Deals

Amazon offers lightning deals that allow you to save even more on various items throughout Prime Day. The kicker is that only a limited stock is available, and the deals end after they are 100 percent claimed or a timer runs out (usually after a few hours).

Furthermore, if you add a lightning deal product to your cart, you only have 15 minutes to check out, or you lose the deal.

You might not see a lighting deal on big-ticket items like squat racks or treadmills, but you may be able to get one on products like protein bars, gym apparel, and smaller equipment like high-quality kettlebells.

Check out Amazon’s current lightning deals — you can even filter by Prime Early Access deals to see which items are on sale now. If the deals on the items you want aren’t available yet, you can filter by Upcoming deals to receive push notifications on your mobile device when they go live.

If you miss out on a lightning deal, you may still be able to get the item you want for the sale price. Just click “Join Waitlist” to receive notifications if the product suddenly becomes available, which may happen if another customer doesn’t check out before their 15 minutes are up.

Use Alexa for Reminders and Exclusive Deals

You can ask Alexa to notify you when deals on your desired items become available. However, you’ll need an Amazon Echo device and the Amazon Alexa app to receive deals notifications on Prime Day.

To get alerts when your favorite fitness items go on sale, you first need to add products to your Amazon Wish List, shopping cart, or Saved for Later list. Then, open the Amazon Alexa app, head to your settings, and click “Notifications.”

From there, tap “Amazon Shopping” and turn on Deal Recommendations.

On Prime Day, ask Alexa, “Alexa, what are my notifications?” Alexa will then let you know about the deals it’s found. It can alert you to deals up to 24 hours before they go live. If you want to buy the item, and the discount is already activated, you can then tell Alexa to make the purchase for you.

What’s more, you can ask Alexa, “Alexa, what are your deals?” throughout the day to get access to deals up to an hour before they go live on Amazon.com. You may also potentially get exclusive deals on fitness products that aren’t available on the website.

Search Social Media

Amazon has been encouraging people to use the hashtag #bigdeals2023 to advertise their Prime Day promotions on Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms. Search that hashtag in the days leading up to Prime Day and throughout the event for even more sales.

Sign Up for a Prime Visa Card

With a Prime Visa Card, you can unlock additional savings and earn rewards points you can apply to your Amazon purchases. Upon approval (which only takes a couple of minutes), eligible Prime members get a $200 Amazon gift card instantly that they can use for Prime Day purchases.

Additional benefits you can get with a Prime Visa Card include 10 percent back or more on eligible Prime Day purchases and six percent cash back at Whole Foods Market on July 11 and 12.

Learn more about the Prime Visa credit card.

Look for Prime Coupons

Amazon has a large library of products with additional coupons you can apply at checkout. Visit the Amazon Coupons page to unlock additional savings.

Check the Price History

Sometimes, Prime Day markdowns aren’t as good as they initially appear. To ensure you’re getting the best deal possible, check sites like CamelCamelCamel or install the Camelizer Chrome extension to look up the price history of your desired item. If you see that the price has been lower than it is on Prime Day at other times throughout the year, you may want to wait to make your purchase.

How To Sign Up for Amazon Prime

To be eligible for most Prime Day discounts, you need to be a Prime member. You can sign up for a free 30-day trial and take advantage of Prime Day deals. Amazon is even offering new Prime members a $10 credit that they can use towards Prime Day purchases.

Signing Up For a Prime Membership on a Mobile Browser

  1. Open your mobile browser and go to amazon.com/prime.
  2. Create an Amazon account if you don’t already have one by selecting “Create Account,” filling out the required fields, and hitting “Continue.”
  3. Tap the three dots and hit “Try Prime.”
  4. Tap “Prime Free Trial” and follow the instructions to select your membership and confirm your billing and shipping address. The trial lasts for 30 days.
  5. After 30 days, your credit card will be charged. You can cancel at any time within the trial period if you don’t wish to continue your membership.

Signing Up For a Prime Membership on Desktop

  1. Open your Internet browser and navigate to amazon.com/prime.
  2. Create an Amazon account if you don’t already have one by hovering over the “Hello, sign in. Account & Lists” button and clicking “Start here” under the “Sign in” button.
  3. Fill out the requested information and hit “Continue.”
  4. Once you’ve created your account, hover over the “Hello [your name]” button and click “Prime membership.”
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to select your membership, enter your credit card information, and confirm your billing and shipping address.
  6. You’ll get a 30-day free trial for Amazon Prime. Your credit card won’t be charged until the 30 days are up. You can cancel at any point within the 30-day trial period if you don’t want to continue your membership.

How Much Does an Amazon Prime Membership Cost?

As of July 2023, an Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. College students who are enrolled in at least one course within the US, District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico can get a Prime membership for just $7.49 per month. Individuals on government assistance programs, like Medicaid and EBT, can also get a discounted Prime membership of about $7 per month.

Benefits of Becoming an Amazon Prime Member

Not convinced that you should keep your Prime membership after Prime Day ends? Perhaps these perks (which isn’t an exhaustive list, by the way) of being a Prime member will convince you to change your mind:

  • One or two-day free shipping on hundreds of products — in some cases, you can even get same-day shipping on eligible items
  • Exclusive savings on items from Whole Foods Market
  • Unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows on Prime Video, which costs $9 per month for non-members
  • Prime Try Before You Buy, a service that allows you to try clothing and shoes for free for seven days. You only get charged for the items you wish to keep after the seven-day try-on period.
  • Access to over two million ad-free songs, playlists, and stations on Prime Music
